January
6, 2000
Just a very brief hotline for this evening. I
want to say welcome to the year 2000. We’re looking forward to a very exciting year as we
take a quantum leap forward in improvements to our ALPA contract on the America West
property.
I want to point each of you to KIT
system messages; that includes the negotiations update done by Tania Rocco this week.
Also, Safety, done by Jay Prochnow earlier this week. And PBS, done by David Weeks – just
a variant of last week. Please direct your attention to those for further information on
the details of those committees.
I also want to thank a couple of
committees for their business this last week. The R&I Committee, very effectively
represented by member John McIlvenna. He’s been bird-dogging the Ed Sherman case,
following up with all of our disabled retirees and with the company’s benefits department
to make sure that all of the paperwork is completed and that payments will soon be on the
way. Thanks very much John for all your work this week.
Compliments to Pete Neff and to all of
the members of his Negotiating Committee, along with Andrew Shostack, who’s been staying
up late virtually every night, in some cases, past midnight, putting the final touches on
our opening positions in preparations for upcoming negotiations, which begin February 7.
I would also like to point out that
next Tuesday evening, January 11, the next Local Council meeting will be held at 6pm at
the Doubletree Hotel in Phoenix. Special guest there will be Ken Cooper, ALPA’s assistant
director of negotiations and representation. He’ll be our primary professional negotiator,
along, of course, with our Negotiating Committee. They’ll be available to speak and hear
your questions, and this would be an excellent time for all of you who have an active
interest in what’s going to be done to represent you in the next year, to come and see for
yourself.
Finally, I want to mention about flu
season. Many of you have been ill and it’s perfectly legitimate, especially so, since we
know some of our management folks have been down sick this week. Our special sympathies go
to our V.P. of Labor Relations, who, I understand, is quite ill suffering from flu-like
symptoms.
For those of you who may be sick
yourself, recognize it’s perfectly OK to call in sick. If you’re well, fly. If you’re not
well, don’t fly.
That’s it for this week. I”ll be
getting back in touch with you next week. Thanks for listening.
That’s it for tonight. The next hotline
update will be on Thursday, January 6. We appreciate your listening, and we’ll talk to you
next week.
