March 30, 2000 Hotline

Ed Sherman Victory

Scheduling Errors

In each of these
particular cases, Capt. Baker found that the inconsistencies were due to an oversight on
the part of the scheduler.

As a result of these
findings, Capt. Baker extends his apology to each of these pilots and plans to compensate
each with an extra golden day to be added in a mutually agreed upon place. For those
pilots previously mentioned who are no longer reserve line holders, Capt. Baker will work
with you on your lines to provide an additional day off.

I encourage all of
these pilots to immediately contact the Chief Pilot’s office to resolve this issue
and to take full advantage of your extra day off.

  MEC Hotline

Good evening, this is MEC Chairman Roger Cox
with the MEC Hotline update for Thursday, March 30. Tonight’s topics are:

America West has agreed to compensate Capt Sherman for back disability pay owed to him as
a result of the Age 60 retest arbitration. He will receive a lump sum tomorrow and regular
paychecks going forward. Ed joins nine other retired disabled pilots in receiving
compensation as a result of this case resolution. I use the term “victory”
because it has required patience, persistence and determination on the part of our
retirees, our staff, and especially our volunteers working in grievance, system board, and
R&I, to address all the obstacles and issues required in this complex case. We believe
that payments could have been made much sooner and the issues dealt with more reasonably.
Resolving such issues promptly and without rancor, however, does not seem to be our
company’s style. So we got busy, got organized and got success. There’s a lesson
here somewhere.

Chief Pilot J.R. Baker is asking that the following pilots contact him concerning recent
scheduling inconsistencies concerning relief/reserve assignments:

The company has notified us that an error was made in payroll and that tomorrow’s
paychecks will not properly reflect amounts owed you under flex. Almost everyone is
affected. They intend to make the correction on the April 14th paycheck.
Section 4.K.2 of our contract says otherwise. We will pursue this.

Several KIT committee hotlines have been updated recently. They include Hotel and R&I
– March 22, Grievance – March 28, SPC and PBS – March 30. Safety and Negotiating should be
updated tomorrow. I especially direct you to PBS since there is new information on
parallel bidding and reference phone numbers and emails for assistance. Our KIT messages
are being updated more frequently, so please get in the habit of checking.

The March-April issue of the Fenix Flight will be sent to the printer by early next
week. Look for it in your home mailbox within the next two weeks.

Our ramp service employees found it necessary to file for mediation this week. They have
been holding informational meetings today and would appreciate a word of encouragement. I
am going to ask every pilot working this week, starting tomorrow, to take the time to
speak to at least one ramper. Tell him ALPA pilots support their effort to achieve a fair
contract.
