July 13, 2000 Hotline

Media Coverage

The simple answer is, now is not the
time. Why should we throw another log on another already out of control fire. Ask yourself
one simple question: How does making comments to the media help our cause? Remember we are
in the process of negotiating an industry standard contract. Talking to the media right
now about AWA’s problems does not help our cause. But make no mistake, we have a
communications plan ready and we will be turning up the volume very soon. When we do turn
up the volume, it will be about our issues and on our terms. Although we
support the efforts of the other union groups at America West, who have gone to the media
about their issues, right now their issues are not our specific issues. We have to
remember to stay focused on our issues and let America West fight its own battles with
poor on-time performance and an inadequate infrastructure to support a growing airline.

Scheduling

First, be pleasant and respectful. Tell
the scheduler to fax or email you a copy of this so-called agreement immediately. Next,
call Traci Carlson on her pager at 1-888-872-5304 and leave a text message. Call the chief
pilot’s office and report the name of the scheduler and the circumstances, and ask
them to correct the problem. Finally, call one of your LEC reps or a member of the
Scheduling Committee.

We need to find out who the offending
scheduler is and have the company do some recurrent training.

  MEC Hotline

Good evening, this is MEC Vice Chairman Bill
Archer with the hotline message for Thursday, July 13th. Tonight’s topics are:

Well, you can say one thing about America West, they sure know how to get free publicity.
For the past week, America West has been on just about every major TV station, and been
written about by most every major local and national newspaper. Most of it has not been
very complementary about our airline, and many pilots have asked where is ALPA’s
response.

We continue to hear from pilots that Crew Schedulers are telling them that ALPA has an
agreement with the company allowing illegal assignments. This is not true! If a Crew
Scheduler calls you with an assignment that violates our contract, then tells you ALPA
agreed to it, don’t believe it and do the following:

The next local council meeting will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 6pm at the Doubletree
Guest Suites, 320 North 44th Street. All pilots in good standing are encouraged
to attend.

The next MEC meeting will be held on August 7th and 8th at the MEC
offices. This will be a two-day meeting. All committee chairmen are encouraged to attend
and submit written reports prior to the meeting.

Please check the following committee hotlines for recent updates: Negotiating, Central Air
Safety, and Scheduling.
