LAHSO

In Canada, however, our “say no to
SIRO/LAHSO” campaign remains active. ALPA still strongly recommends that our members
continue to decline SIRO clearances in Canada until further notice from the Association.

AWA Quarterly Earnings
America West’s second quarter earnings declined 21% from the same period last year.
The company blames fuel cost increases. Continental’s same period earnings increased
13% and Southwest’s increased 21%. They buy fuel too, don’t they? You could
argue that some of Southwest’s prosperity came from all the America West passengers
stranded by our cancellations. But it’s reasonable to assume that we could have, and
should have, matched Continental’s performance. We came up $14 million short of that.
Where did it all go? It wasn’t fuel, it was terrible performance.

The fundamental competency of an
airline is its ability to operate a reliable network. America West cancels more than five
percent of its scheduled flights. It delays over 30% of its flights. It consistently wins
the triple dunce cap for worst in complaints, baggage handling, and on time. It is failing
in its most basic commercial purpose. Sunshine and spin control cannot change that fact.

Our management is not being candid.
This quarterly report does not reflect the true condition of our airline. The pilots and
other employees of this airline have a huge stake in its success. We can have no
confidence in our top management until they own up to their mistakes. I challenge the
chairman, the board of directors, and especially the controlling stockholder to explain to
me, and to all our pilots, what real changes you intend to make to preserve your interests
and ours.

That’s it for this week. The next
hotline update will be on Thursday, July 27. Thanks for listening.

  MEC Hotline

Good evening, this is MEC Chairman Roger Cox
with the hotline message for Thursday, July 20th. Tonight’s topics are:

ALPA is pleased to announce that the FAA’s final LAHSO order is consistent with all
the criteria that ALPA had identified as necessary for safe operations. ALPA’s
recommendation to decline LAHSO clearances has been rescinded. Members may once again
participate in land-and-hold-short operations in U.S. airports. The FAA has instructed air
traffic controllers not to issue LAHSO clearances for any runway configuration that fails
to fulfill all the required LAHSO safeguards. Just remember that you must still comply
with the FOM.

The Retirement & Insurance Committee has filed a group grievance on behalf of all
pilots who have been denied Long Term Disability Buy-Up by Metlife in the past few months.
If you have been denied this insurance, please immediately fax your Metlife denial letter
to the MEC office at (602) 306-4119.

The PBS Committee needs volunteers who are interested in learning more about the technical
aspects of PBS. Once volunteers have received an in-depth education about the complete PBS
system, they will eventually participate in the ALPA monitoring of the PBS system. If
you’re interested, please contact either Del Brummett or David Weeks via the PBS KIT
system or the PBS hotline at 480-693-1968 or 1-800-698-1833.

The July issue of the Fenix Flight has been mailed out. My compliments go to Brice
LeCarre for his fine work on the magazine. We also recently mailed out the July issue of Contract
Awareness
. This issue contains my summary of the negotiations, the progress we’ve
made so far, and highlights of the tentative agreements reached so far. Each of these
publications was mailed to your home address, so if you don’t get yours, call the MEC
office to verify that we have your correct mailing address.

The next local council meeting will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 6pm at the Doubletree
Guest Suites, 320 North 44th Street. All pilots in good standing are encouraged
to attend. The next MEC meeting will be held on August 7th and 8th
at the MEC offices. Selected committee chairmen will be asked to attend or to submit
written reports.

The following committees have recent updates:
Negotiating-July 14
Safety-July 14
