Committee Hotline Updates

We’re Still Waiting!

There seems to be an unwillingness to
adequately address these problems. The fact is, you can’t grow an airline without
good people. And guess what, folks? We are losing our good people to other airlines

It is painfully obvious to us that top
management is using the Band-Aid approach to try to cure the cancer within. It won’t
work. And it’s time for management to stop applying the snake oil and come out to
clean up the mess they have created.

That’s it for this week. The next
hotline update will be on Thursday, August 10. Thanks for listening.

  MEC Hotline

Good evening, this is MEC Vice Chairman Bill
Archer with the hotline message for Thursday, August 3rd. Tonight’s topics are:

The first Family Awareness meeting for east valley neighborhood leaders will be held
tomorrow evening, August 4 at the home of Tim Walters, chairman of the committee. In
addition to viewing the new Family Awareness video, the volunteers will learn about their
roles as Family Awareness neighborhood leaders, hear about the issues and status of
Contract 2000 negotiations, and learn of ALPA’s family resources. Additional meetings
will be scheduled as more volunteers come forward. Look for details in the August issue of
Family Awareness News, which will be mailed next week.

If you’re looking for a night of good clean fun, the Membership Committee is looking
for a few good bowlers. All pilots in good standing, and their families, are invited to a
free “End of Summer Family Bowling Night” from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22 at
the Kyrene Bowling Lanes, 6625 West Chandler Blvd. Come out and bowl a few games, eat a
buffet dinner, and have a few drinks. It’s all for a good cause – to promote
solidarity and unity in our pilot group.

Over the last few months, the Flight Pay Loss donations have steadily increased to more
than $118,000. So far, 1,140 pilots – or 67% – have contributed to the fund, which
will help offset our operating costs during negotiations. A donation of just one flight
hour is all we ask from each pilot. As our negotiations get into the more contentious
issues, we need the full support of this pilot group to send management a message that we
mean business.
The next local council meeting will be held this coming Tuesday, August 8 at 6pm at
the Doubletree Suites at 44th and Van Buren. The next MEC meeting will be held
on August 14th and 15th at the MEC offices beginning at 0900.

The following committees have or will have new hotline messages on the KIT system this
weekend: PBS and Central Air Safety

Last week, MEC Chairman Roger Cox challenged the America West board of directors to
directly respond to him on how they are going to fix our operational problems. What we
received was a press release that was not very detailed. We’re still waiting to hear
why the board allows the senior executives to continue to tarnish the image of America
West Airlines, and most importantly, destroy the morale of the employees? We are still
waiting to hear how reducing our growth plan by 3.5% — approximately 17 flights a day —
will improve the operation, when we’re already canceling an average of 35 flights a day?
We are still waiting to hear why this management team continues to thumb its nose at
improvements recommended by the airline’s seasoned labor groups, the FAA, and their
own internal managers? And finally, we’re still waiting to hear if the board really
does believe that the current management formula will continue to reap financial rewards
for the shareholders?
