Committee Hotline Updates

Labor Day

Management Shuffle

Gil came by the MEC office yesterday
and introduced President Doug Parker to the officers. Mr. Parker was fair enough to admit
that our past warnings about maintenance and other service issues were right. We certainly
hope that Mr. Parker’s latest operations plan works, but we remain to be convinced.
As long as the old management shuffle goes on, we think it’s a pretty sure sign that
our managers don’t have the latitude to do their job right.

That’s it for this week. The next
hotline update will be on Thursday, August 24. Thanks for listening.

    MEC Hotline

Good evening, this is MEC Chairman Roger Cox
with the hotline message for Thursday, August 17th. Tonight’s topics are:

Kyle Sims and his Membership Committee have been very active recently. In addition to the
upcoming Bowling Night, they are planning a major golf tournament on September 19th
and 20th, and a Christmas party in the month of December. These are in addition
to the new-hire events they provide for each new class, which are quite frequent this
year. I can tell you that the planning has been outstanding and you are really going to be
impressed with what they have organized. The bowling night next Tuesday at Kyrene Lanes is
a freebie. We have the whole place and we’re going to have a ball. Be there!

For those of you still paying your merger fund, make sure you enclose with your payment
the statement coupon indicating that your payment is for the America West MEC merger fund.
There have been a few posting errors because the accounting people didn’t know what
the payment was for.

Here’s a guide to this week’s other KIT system messages. Negotiating and PBS
committees were updated Aug 10 and will be redone tomorrow. Central Air Safety,
Scheduling, Jumpseat, and SPC were done last week. Hotel and R&I were done in July,
Grievance in March, and the others are standing messages. Remember, you can leave messages
here for each of these committees.

I draw your attention to Duane Woerth’s remarks in the Air Line Pilot on
Labor Day. To us, this is not just another three-day holiday weekend. It’s a time for
remembering the personal commitment it takes to make our careers successful. It’s not
enough to do a good job in the classroom, in the simulator, and on the line. We’ve
got to show up and be counted as union members. Labor Day is September 4th, and
you’re invited to a very family friendly Labor Day parade in downtown Phoenix.
I’m going to be there because I think it’s important. I look forward to seeing
you there too.

We heard through the grapevine that one America West vice president got a standing ovation
at an Air Transport Association meeting because he had lasted long enough to attend his
second annual meeting. Executive Vice President Gil Mook won’t be getting that
ovation. He’s joining the long parade of ex-managers from this airline. Gil is a
person of high integrity and strong personality, and I suspect he was the source of some
serious fireworks in the executive suite.
