Bowling Success
Our thanks to Kyle Sims and his Membership Committee for the great turnout at Kyrene Lanes
Tuesday night. More than 100 of our pilots brought their families to Chandler for a night
of fun, fellowship, free food and drinks. This is the precursor for even more successful
Membership events in the works.

MEC Hotline
Good evening, this is MEC Chairman Roger Cox
with the hotline message for Thursday, August 24th. Tonight’s topics are:
Captain Ed Carlson is the next of our pilots to take the plunge into retirement. Ed will
fly his last trip on Wednesday, August 30, returning to Phoenix on flight #2846 from
Baltimore at 12:26. If you’re available on Wednesday to help Ed celebrate, please
show up at the jetway to help make his send off even more memorable. There will also be a
party at Brewski’s the 31st. Check the fliers in the crew room for
details.
The next local council meeting will be held at 6pm, September 12 at the Best Western Grace
Inn in Ahwatukee. That’s at I-10 and Elliott Road. It’s council election season
so now is the time to come out and participate.
There’s a quick and dirty PBS bidding checklist in your mailboxes and on the pilots
news email net. For those of you who want minimum involvement in the whole thing, this
just might be the ticket. Follow the checklist, cover your six. More details on the PBS
hotline.
A few of you have recently been told that you don’t have the option to rollover
vacation cancellation to next year. That was false. The contract is pretty clear –
section7.C.3.a.1. If you’ve been told that, the company is going to re-contact you
and give you the rollover option. If you’re about to go through Airbus Captain
upgrade, you can plan on having your vacation cancelled and you will have the rollover
option. As you know, the MEC recommends this option. Speak to your local council reps if
you have any questions.
It’s election season for local, state, and federal officials. The candidates’
attitudes and philosophies of today will affect your life tomorrow. I’ve had the
opportunity to talk to many of our elected officials and I assure you that they’re
interested in your vote. This week and next our Government Affairs chairman, Eric Edwards,
will be in the crew check-in hallway and available to discuss candidates’ views and
answers to his questionnaire. Take the time to inform yourself.
I want to remind everyone to attend the Labor Day March on September 4th, in
downtown Phoenix. This will be a unique opportunity for us to show our unity and
solidarity as we pass the six-month anniversary of the start of our Contract 2000
negotiations. Flyers with details of the event will be posted in the literature holders in
the Phoenix crew lounge by the end of this week. You’ll also be receiving telephone,
postcard, email and KIT system notification. Don’t be surprised at how many times and
how many ways you hear about this. We’re turning up the volume.
