Christmas Party

$35 per person. Posters and fliers are
going out with more information. We must have early signups to insure that this
event comes off as planned. I am ordering my tickets now and I’m urging each of you
to do the same. Don’t procrastinate on this one.

Let me tell you what’s wrong with
that. A bid is a fair and legal way for you to express your preferences. Any time you get
a call soliciting a particular choice during a bid you are being asked to ignore the
integrity and impartiality of the process. You very likely are being offered some
inducement that was not part of the original bid announcement and is therefore not
available to all on an equal basis. This time it was selective release of seat locks; next
time it could be time and a half for a vacation cancellation or a high credit trip over
your cap. Every time you accept an inducement you’re saying that it’s more
important than the letter of the contract.

One term the company lawyers are fond
of is “past practice.” It means they’ve been getting away with something
for so long that the letter of the contract is no longer enforceable.

When you get a phone call during a
biddable process, ask “is this a proper call under our contract?” Then get out
your contract and look it up. A contract is only as good as the people who follow it.

That’s it for this week. The next
hotline update will be on Thursday, October 19th. Thanks for listening.

  MEC Hotline

Good evening, this is MEC Chairman Roger Cox with the hotline message for
Thursday, October 12th. Tonight’s topics are:

The time has come to decide whether preferential bidding is right for this pilot group.
Later this month, each of you will receive a letter in the mail explaining the PBS voting
process. For the first time in ALPA’s history at America West, pilots will vote via
telephone ballot. You will not receive a mail ballot. What that means is, at a certain
time, you will be asked to call a specified 800 number to vote whether you have reached an
acceptable level of satisfaction with PBS. It’s a very simple system and we’ll
be able to get the results from ALPA within 72 hours after the vote closes. The Wilson
Poll will also be conducting a survey on PBS, so please respond thoughtfully if you are
called.

Next week ALPA will host its biennial Board of Directors meeting in Miami, Florida. Your
MEC members and officers will attend. The Board will consider national policy issues and
will conduct elections of ALPA Executive Vice Presidents. The EVP’s comprise the
Executive Council, which makes many funding decisions and advises ALPA’s President.

If you haven’t checked your T4 box lately, I encourage you to do so. The R&I
Committee recently distributed a new issue of its R&I Update to all mailboxes.
The issue details the company’s increase in the PPO premiums, as well as some other
important issues concerning our company benefits.

The Membership Committee is planning an all-union Christmas party to be held at
Rockin’ Rodeo in Tempe on Dec. 14th. The price per person will be $30 until Nov.
29th, and thereafter will be

Recently, there was a rumor going around that America West was going to enter into a joint
venture with a new Mexican airline being formed out of the old Taesa Airlines. America
West management has stated that this press statement was erroneous and that we have no
relationship with this company.

During and after the recent vacancy/reduction bid many of you received a phone call from
persons in crew management. You were asked about your willingness to make a move in your
seat and/or equipment. The fact was that the company expected sufficient numbers of pilots
would voluntarily move, and when that wasn’t happening they began to call and solicit
volunteers.
