Human Capital

United Airlines has been taking a lot
of heat from the financial community lately because of its poor short term performance.
But United’s management has been looking over the horizon. They recognize that in the
future the successful airlines will be those that build the biggest and strongest
networks. An airline network requires huge numbers of skilled employees, and United has
become the biggest talent magnet in the industry. They’ve laid down the challenge.
“You want to compete in this business? You’re going to have to provide a great
place to work.”

Look around the industry. The real
successes are the ones that look beyond the balance sheet. They’re the ones who know
the real value of human capital.

That’s it for this week. The next
hotline will be Thursday, November 2. Thanks for listening.

America West top management now says last weeks webcast remarks about retroactivity were a
mistake. What’s mistake number two? Not saying so very publicly and very candidly to
the people affected: the pilots. We’re waiting. In the mean time, the mood is getting
ugly. We’re hot about our crummy operation. We’re hot about the money we waste.
We’re hot about the implied disrespect for the bargaining process. Stay tuned, this
isn’t over.

A current study by Margaret Blair of the Brookings Institution focuses on understanding
intangible sources of value. It says that traditional financial accounting systems may
account for as little as 25% of the real value of a corporation because they have no way
to account for intangibles like copyrights, patents, research, and intellectual resources.
An airline’s most important intangible is the skill and motivation of its employees.
America West has been letting that intangible asset erode because it doesn’t show up
on the balance sheet.
