November 30, 2000 Hotline

November 30, 2000

This is MEC Chairman Roger Cox with the MEC hotline message for Thursday, November 30.
Topics tonight are:

Other Hotlines

From time to time I like to remind you to check the other hotlines on this KIT system.
Here are the ones with the most recent updates: 3-1, Negotiating, Pete Neff , 11/17; 3-3,
Scheduling, Rick Weber, 11/25; 3-6, PBS, David Weeks, 11/17; 4-2, Hotel, Mike Plapp,
11/16; and 4-6, SPC, John Becker, Dec 1. I really appreciate John getting his December
message out before the month is even here. Thanks, John. We distribute this hotline via
email and many of you get it that way, but for people who are on the road, this is the
best way to get the latest information. You can leave a message for the respective
committee on that same KIT mailbox. If you’re in a hotel somewhere and there’s
nobody home and you’re tired of 900 numbers, check into this KIT system and get
caught up.

Aid to Adoption of Special Kids

This message comes to us courtesy of Kyle Sims, who does such a superb job of running
our Membership Committee. Next week, Kyle will have his message on the Membership KIT
hotline, which is 5-1.

For this year’s Christmas party we will be sponsoring AASK Arizona, a provider of
adoption services for kids with special needs. In addition to adoption services, at each
Christmas season, they also provide a gift for each of the 6,800 foster children in the
State foster care system. We will be collecting gifts the night of the Union Christmas
party to assist AASK in this project. The biggest need is for teen-oriented gifts. If you
prefer, you may give a cash donation which will allow AASK to purchase appropriate gifts.
Your generous participation can really make this a special Christmas for these kids. And,
by the way, the State of Arizona will provide up to $200 in tax credit for this donation.
Of course, this isn’t as good a deal as the alternate fuels credit, but look at it
this way. It actually benefits real people.

PBS Server Crash

As of 8:30 tonight, the PBS lines for A320 FO’s has not been completed because of
a server crash. The Adopt server in Montreal is also unable to help at this time. All
other pilot categories have been completed and your 174 lines should be available.
It’s ironic. A320 FO’s were the ones most in favor of PBS on the survey. I guess
you always hurt the ones you love the most.

Violent Drunks On Board

Today we had a flight divert in to Albuquerque because drunken passengers got out of
control. They were on the way to Las Vegas, naturally. One flight attendant was so shaken
up she couldn’t continue. The FBI met the flight and took fourteen people off in
handcuffs. Throw the book at ‘em.

America West’s Thanksgiving Performance

Last week from Tuesday through Sunday was a boffo performance. We ran 99% completion
and 77% on time, including one day at 88% on time. Credit where credit is due. This is
something to be happy about. It took 150 new mechanics, 350 new rampers and 12 spare
aircraft, but it worked, at least for one week. For one week, we don’t have to
apologize to our neighbors for who we work for. We don’t have to listen to
disparaging remarks from other pilots when we ride jumpseats. We don’t have to say
“ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the delay…” Think how great it
would be if we focused this much every week on running a good operation. Think what it
would be like if the company’s officers and the union leaders walked through terminal
four saying “thank you” to every agent, every ramper, every flight attendant,
and every pilot for the job we did together last week. Wouldn’t that be a real
“thanksgiving performance!”

That’s all for this week. The next hotline will be Thursday, December 7. Thanks
for listening.
