| This is Communications Committee Chairman David Weeks with the MEC Hotline Update for Thursday, July 1, 1999. Tonight’s Hotline items include: Capt. Jon W. Myers died unexpectedly Saturday, June 26, from complications of cancer surgery. He was 51. The funeral was held last Wednesday at the Word of Grace church in Mesa. Over 30 America West pilots, including Local Council Chairman and Captain representative Jack Ryan, attended the funeral. The family requests that donations be sent In lieu of flowers to Ms. Jean Myers, 1217 S. Maple St., Mesa, AZ. 85206 Discussions with management are continuing on the First Officer as Instructor issue. See the recently mailed Just the Facts for details on our position. More on next week’s hotline. The memo from Chief Pilot J.R. Baker is another source of disagreement. While there continue to be two main areas of disagreement about the new memo, the MEC and the Chief Pilot’s office have agreed to continue talks to resolve the issue. In the meantime, your MEC urges all pilots to dress professionally, and observe the uniform policy as outlined in the Flight Operations Manual. Secretary Treasurer Michael Calabrese reports that the Flight Pay Loss donation program is picking up steam. Over 200 pilots have donated one hour of credit to the MEC to help offset the growing Flight Pay Loss budget expenses. Contributions now exceed $16,000. If you have not yet contributed, please join your fellow pilots in donating for this important cause. Call the office at 602-306-1208 or 800-MEC-AWAL to donate. A Local Council meeting was held last night at the Best Western Grace Inn of Ahwatukee. This new location proved to be popular, as nearly 50 pilots attended. There was lively discussion on PBS, the First Officer as Instructor program, negotiating issues, and the uniform policy. The next local council meeting will be held on July 26 from 6-10 p.m. at this same location; the Best Western Grace Inn of Ahwatukee. The hotel is located at the southwest corner of Elliot Road and the I-10 interchange. All members in good standing are encouraged to attend. The Central Air Safety Committee has developed a survey to evaluate pilot fatigue among our pilots. It will be distributed to your Terminal 4 mailboxes in the next two weeks. Please take the time to fill out the survey honestly. The results will be used in our ongoing talks with Crew Resources about pairing construction. As a reminder, the deadline for returning your Contract 2000 pilot survey is July 12th. All pilots are strongly encouraged to complete the survey, and have it postmarked and mailed by the 12th. The survey results will be used by the Negotiating Committee to prepare their Section 6 opener for the upcoming contract negotiations.
