ALPA President to address AWA pilots
Three of ALPA’s national officers will be featured guests at the next PHX Council 62
Local Council meeting. ALPA President Duane Woerth, Vice-President of Administration Jerry
Mugerditchian, and Executive Vice President Cress Bernard will address the group and be
available during the meeting and the following reception to answer your questions. Also on
hand will be both the newly elected and the outgoing MEC officers. The meeting is
Thursday, August 26 at the Doubletree Hotel, 44th Street and Van Buren in
Phoenix. The meeting will be held from 5pm to 8pm, followed by a reception from 8pm to
10pm. This is an open meeting: all members in good standing and spouses are welcome.

On a related note, a new issue of MEC Directions will be distributed to T4 pilot
boxes on Friday afternoon. The issue will discuss the recent MEC officer elections, and
features bio’s of MEC Chairman-elect Roger Cox and Vice Chairman-elect Bill Archer,
along with MEC Secretary/Treasurer Mike Calabrese.

Also, over the next week or two, the incoming officers will be brought up to speed in a
series of internal briefings, and will meet some of the key players in senior management.
Strategy sessions with ALPA national are also being scheduled for September and October.

Flight Pay Loss Donation Campaign Continues

That concludes this week’s hotline. There’s no time like the present to start
building solidarity for Contract 2000. Start by wearing your ALPA pin. Remember, on the
flight line, every flight counts; at the bargaining table, every pilot counts. But only if
you’re willing to stand up and be counted. The next scheduled hotline update will be
Thursday, August 19th. Thanks for listening.

  This is
Communications Committee Chairman David Weeks with the MEC Hotline. Tonight’s topics
are:

The Negotiating Committee, the Scheduling Committee and Central Air Safety are studying
the FAA’s pending changes to reserve pilot rest requirements to evaluate whether and
how the FARs may require changes to our contract. The FARs will, in general, be more
restrictive than the contract in regard to reserve duty limits. In other words, a pilot on
a given reserve shift will likely need to be released from standby duty, or flight duty,
earlier than presently required under our work rules. The changes will also complicate, if
not eliminate, back-to-back reserve shifts, such as C to A, or even C to B. Note that the
FAA will start enforcing the new rules in December. Until then, in the interest of safety,
pilots should not request back-to-back C to A reserve. All reserve and relief pilots
should submit, as part of their standing reserve bid, the following specific request: do
not assign C to A, back-to-back.

The Family Awareness Committee plans to have its second family get-together on October 13
from 5pm to 9pm, at the Confederate Air Force Hangar in Mesa. Refreshments will be served,
as well as hamburgers, hot dogs, and brauts. Admission is free to all pilots and their
families. Additional details are forthcoming.

The Flight Pay loss campaign has been a tremendous success, and continues to bring in
much-needed money to help offset our Flight Pay loss budget expenses. However, many of you
have yet to make a contribution. Your donation of one hour per year of credit greatly
helps the MEC reduce the costs of having volunteers released from trips for ALPA business.
In addition, Captain Sam Berghoff has joined the effort as chairman of the campaign. If
you need a donation form, please call the MEC office at 602-306-1208 or 800-MEC-AWAL.
