September 30, 1999 Hotline

  Sept. 30, 1999

PBS
Due to delays in printing the PBS manual, and the company’s continuing upgrade of its
computer system, the start of PBS classroom training has been delayed one week. Classes
will now begin on October 11 — not October 4 – as earlier reported. The date for all
pilots to complete the class has also been moved back a week to December 2. A revised copy
of our publication “PBS on the Line’ has been posted on the bulletin board in
the PHX crew lounge.

Sign-up sheets for the classes are in the Chief Pilot’s office. Be aware of your
duty limitations when signing up for classes, and if there’s a conflict contact the
Chief pilot’s office.

Rest Requirements

ALPA is in complete support of the FAA’s enforcement of reserve rest requirements.

We will vigorously oppose any extension of December 12 deadline. We also expect to see
further changes to flight time duty time rules which address circadian and sleep
opportunity next year.

AFA P.R.I.D.E.

The Pegasus Project is a non-profit organization, founded in 1993. It is solely funded
by flight attendant contributions and fund raising events. All funds, with the exception
of money for stamps and phone charges, are distributed to flight attendants in need, who
have experienced a life threatening illness or a disabling injury which prevents them from
working.

P.R.I.D.E., which stands for Parents Re-establishing Independent Development and
Encourgement, is a non-profit organization that works with brain injured children,
adolescents, and adults. Its goal is to help the brain injured reach their full potential
through expanded day care programs, the development of residential programs which help
loved ones from being sent out-of-state for care giving, and the establishment of peer
mentor groups.

We encourage you to participate in this fundraising event. Tickets may be purchased by
calling Nick Kirkeby at the AFA office at 480-966-1231. Tickets are $35 each. ALPA will be
represented at the event by MEC Vice Chairman Bill Archer.

Local Council Meeting

The next Local Council meeting is scheduled for November 9 with fellowship form 6pm to
7pm, followed by the council meeting from 7pm to 10pm. The location of the meeting will be
announced at a later date.

Pilot Retirement Dinner

Also, in an effort to invite AWA retirees from previous years, we ask that anyone with
knowledge of current addresses of any retirees, to please call the MEC office or ask the
retirees to call us directly so that we may send them an invitation.

Any assistance in this effort will be much appreciated, and will help to make this
event a very special one for our retirees.

Family Awareness Social Event

Pilots planning to attend must RSVP by calling Sandi at the MEC office no later than
October 6.

That ‘s the hotline for this week. The next scheduled hotline update will be
Thursday, October 7. Thanks for listening.

    MEC Hotline
  This is MEC
Chairman Roger Cox with the MEC hotline for Thursday, September 30, 1999. Tonight’s
topics are:

FAA’s deadline for airline compliance with reserve rest requirements is Dec. 12. The
FAA has published a notice in the Federal Register stating that it will
“rigorously enforce the regulations.” Many airline contracts still have 24 hour
a day reserve and must change dramatically. Our reserve system needs only slight changes
to be in compliance. We expect those changes to be discussed with us in the near future.

The Association of Flight Attendants is sponsoring a gala affair on October 16 for the
non-profit organizations P.R.I.D.E., and the Pegasus Project. The event, which will take
place at the Pointe Hilton Resort on South Mountain, will include a fashion show, a
champagne brunch, free door prizes, and raffle items.

Nearly 50 pilots attended last night’s Local Council meeting in Ahwatukee. Frank
Shine was the featured guest, who was presented with two plaques for his years of service
to America West and as a former MEC chairman. Frank retired from America West on September
25, his 60th birthday. On behalf of the MEC, I would like to express my sincere
thanks to Frank for his work and accomplishments during his term as MEC chairman; and wish
him much success in his retirement.

The Membership Committee is planning the first AWA MEC Pilot Retirement Dinner on October
19 from 7pm to 10pm at the Doubletree Hotel in Phoenix. The event is free to all America
West pilots and their spouse or guest. Any active pilots are also invited to attend at a
cost of $25 per person. Please RSVP to Sandi Siniaho at the MEC office no later than
October 10 by calling 602-306-1208 or 1-800-MEC-AWAL.

Once again, all members in good standing and their families are invited to the second
Family Awareness get-together on October 13 from 5pm to 9pm, at the Confederate Air Force
Hangar at Mesa Falcon Field. Refreshments will be served, as well as hamburgers, hot dogs,
and bratwurst. Admission is free to pilots and their families. Pilots are also encouraged
to bring their classic cars, airplanes, or motorcycles to be put on display on the ramp.
