ALPA Takes Initiative
to Unite Pilots
under One Union

The Board of Directors of the Air Line
Pilots Association, International (ALPA) has overwhelmingly approved a sweeping resolution
to work toward bringing all airline pilots in the U.S. and Canada under one union roof.

The action was taken today at ALPA’s
biennial Board meeting. The Board of Directors is composed of the elected officers from
all 49 ALPA airline properties, ranging from megacarriers such as United, Delta,
Northwest, and US Airways, to dozens of regional, cargo and charter carriers in the U.S.
and Canada.

“This is a watershed event for
airline pilots,” said Capt. Duane Woerth, president of ALPA. “For the first time
in the history of commercial aviation, we see the realistic prospect of uniting all
airline pilots in the U.S. and Canada under one international union.”

“ALPA began to look toward
unifying pilot representation with the advent of the globalization of the airline industry
a decade ago. It was clear to us that managements were positioning themselves to be able
to use divide-and-conquer strategies against individual unions,” Woerth said.

“We achieved the first major step
toward our goal when the Canadian ALPA agreed to merge with us, and today’s action
will further intensify our efforts. We already have had exploratory talks with the pilots
at American, Continental, Continental Express, and FedEx. And at Air Canada, there will be
a representation election in the next few months that we are hoping will bring them into
the ALPA fold,” Woerth said.

Under the Board resolution, all members
in good standing from a merged union will be offered ALPA membership. The leadership of
the Allied Pilots Association, representing American’s pilots, recently appointed a
committee to study the benefits of being represented by ALPA, following the same action
taken earlier by the FedEx pilots; and leaders of the Independent Association of
Continental Pilots will meet next week with ALPA representatives for further talks.
