America West MEC Hotline for Aug. 9, 2001

If you have not already, you should soon receive a ballot to
nominate members to replace First Officer Representative Eric
Edwards, who has assumed the duties of MEC vice chairman, and LEC
Secretary-Treasurer Mike Calabrese, who has resigned.
Instructions are included on where to send completed ballots and
nominees will also be accepted at the Sept. 18 Local Council
meeting. Only the two individuals receiving the most nominations
for each position will be selected as candidates. Therefore, it
is important that all members nominate the individual or
individuals they would like to see run as the final two
candidates for each position. The regular election will be
conducted by phone balloting. To provide representation during
the election process, an interim F/O representative will be
elected at the Sept. 18 council meeting.

MEC Chairman Roger Cox will be on Phoenix Channel 8’s Horizons
show tonight at 7 p.m. discussing the safety issues surrounding
the proposed Cardinals football stadium in Tempe.

Balloting
Begins

Deadhead
Reservations
Your Grievance Committee is requesting all pilots who deadhead as
part of a pairing to get a printed copy of your reservation from
the gate agent and drop it in the ALPA box in the Terminal 4
Pilot Lounge.

Safety
Committee Message
Central Air Safety Committee Chairman Terry Stadler has updated
his committee’s KIT system message with a report on the quarterly
safety meeting with the company. Please take a few minutes to
listen to this update.

Priority
Fly
When bidding, you have the ability to select a “Priority Fly
List” option that gives the company the ability to contact you
and assign you additional trips. Recently, the company began
using this PBS feature more often. If you do select the Priority
Fly option and are contacted by crew scheduling at your published
contact number, you are required to accept the assignment. It’s
important to remember that the company cannot rebuild your
existing trips and cannot assign you to over 90 hours when making
a Priority Fly assignment.

MCF
Allocation Approved
MEC Secretary-Treasurer Ted Phipps has confirmed that ALPA’s
Executive Board approved the $3 million Major Contingency Fund
allocation to the America West MEC. This funding will be used to
support communication, family awareness and pilot-to-pilot
efforts during our continuing contract negotiations and will
enable the MEC to fund a Strategic Preparedness Center. You will
hear more about this in future hotline messages.

Labor
Day Success
The
MEC would like to thank the SPC and Family Awareness committees for
their hard work in coordinating our successful Labor Day events. We
had a great turnout for the parade, informational picketing and leafleting,
and the Family Awareness lunch and our demonstrations received extensive
media coverage from Phoenix TV and radio news. We would also like
to thank all the members who took time out of their holiday and participated
in these important events.
