This is Eric Edwards with the MEC hotline
on Thursday, November 7. Tonight’s topics:
1. Strike Center
2. Politics
3. Local Council Rep Elections
4. Maestro Upgrade
5. Third Annual Union Christmas Party
Strike Center
The Strike Center will be open
again November 11 for Monday Night Football. The MEC is encouraging all
the Captain and First Officer Representative candidates to come by and
answer any and all questions directed to them. Food and drinks are provided.
Politics
I would like to thank the pilots who joined me at different polling
places this week to support our Congressional candidate. Thanks to Alex
Curti, John McIlvenna, Mike Mullen, Ted Phipps, Dave Simmons, Archie Turnbull
and Russ Webber. Craig Columbus didn’t win and our America West home district
Congressman, J.D. Hayworth, continues to show little regard for collective
bargaining. This Council and all members will need to increase our political
activity in the future to counter efforts detrimental to our profession.
On a related note, with control of the
Senate moving to the Republicans, I presume that John McCain will be pushing
his baseball arbitration bill. It’s a bad piece of legislation and I will
be sending you the complete text by e-mail in the near future so that
you can decide for yourselves.
Local Council Rep Elections
With the nominees now determined, eligible members should receive
voting instructions for the Local Council representative elections the
week of November 18. As before, voting will be conducted by phone and
the Internet. Balloting will close on December 10 and the new representatives-elect
will be introduced at the December 11 Local Council meeting. Biographical
information for all candidates has been posted on the ALPA board in the
T-4 pilot lounge and will also appear in the November-December issue of
“A Line in the Sand.”
Maestro Upgrade
On Monday, the company upgraded to the newest version of Millennium
Maestro for pilots. While the upgrade itself went fine and the new version
is working, pilots who have tried to access Maestro using CompuServe have
discovered that the necessary update to allow access to the new version
is not working properly. As a result, pilots who use CompuServe are currently
unable to access Maestro. Pilots who use Flightline software to access
Maestro should be able to connect with no problem.
CompuServe is aware of the problem and
is working to fix it, but when that fix will be available is anyone’s
guess. We understand your frustration and will keep pushing to get this
resolved as quickly as possible. We’ll keep you posted when we have any
new information.
Third Annual Union Christmas Party
The Third Annual America West Union Employees Christmas Party is
set for Monday, December 16 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Club Rio in Tempe.
Tickets are $10 per person if reserved before December 10. The cost includes
a dinner buffet, dancing and door prizes. Once again, there will be a
silent auction to benefit Aid to Adoption of Special Kids. More information
on buying tickets can be found by logging in to the pilots-only section
of the MEC website at www.awalpa.org.
That’s all for tonight; the next regular hotline update will be on Thursday,
November 14. Thanks for listening.
