1. Upcoming Local Council Meeting
Upcoming Local Council Meeting-The next
Local Council meeting is scheduled for next Thursday, April 17th at 6:00pm
at the Doubletree Hotel on 44th street in Phoenix. All members and spouses
are welcome to attend.
2. Filling the Open Captain Representative
Position
All members in good standing are reminded
to submit their nomination ballot for the open Captain Representative
position. Ballots can be mailed to the MEC office but must be received
no later than April 17th to be counted. Pilots can also submit their ballot
at the door at the April 17th Local Council meeting. At that meeting,
members will nominate and elect a new interim Captain Representative.
All members are reminded that if they wish to vote for the interim Captain
Representative, they must attend the meeting as proxies will not be accepted.
3. MEC Officers Meet with the Company
Tomorrow, Friday, April 11th, MEC officers
will meet with America West’s CEO, Doug Parker. Our goal for this meeting
is to gain a firm understanding of the company’s position on issues important
to the pilot group and to develop a working relationship with senior management.
We will also discuss the steps the company will need to take to establish
trust with pilots and to remind the company of the substantial contributions
that the pilots have made to ensure the success and survival of America
West Airlines.
4. System Board News
System Board Chairman, Tom Nehez reports
success in resolving two additional disputes that arose in enforcing one
part of the recent arbitration decision in the Ed Sherman income offset
case. In addition to getting Ed Sherman paid more than $35,000, the Association
was able to overcome recent formal company objections to the arbitrator
and recover more than $44,000 for two pilots under the authority of this
decision. In this case alone, the Association
has been successful in recovering or protecting nearly $600,000 for pilots
of Council 62. Full details of the Sherman cases were printed in the last
Line In The Sand and are available to the membership in the System Board
area of the MEC web site. Thanks to the System Board, ALPA legal, and
our Contract Administrator for a job well done!
5. The Grievance Automation Project
(GAP)
Council 62 has undertaken a project to
automate the grievance filing process. When the project is complete, pilots
will be able to use the internet to file a grievance electronically and
will also be able to use an extensive library to research past grievances.
The new system will greatly expedite the grievance filing process and
will also be useful as a management tool for the MEC. Stay tuned for the
announcement of the start of this new program.
6. Aeromedical Committee News
The company has produced a multi-page document
complete with guidelines for dealing with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS) on the company’s website at www.awatoday.com. The site has important
information on the disease and how to properly respond to an inflight
notification of passenger infection. SARS will also be discussed at the
quarterly safety meeting scheduled for this Friday.
That’s it for tonight. The next update
of this hotline will be next
Thursday, April 17th 2003.
