Election results are now final in the Council 62 chairman election tallied in Herndon

Fifty-four percent of eligible members participated in the election, returning 663

remains as LEC secretary-treasurer. Captain reps Ryan and Chambless will join first
officer reps Eric Durnal and Gary Bakewell as members of the America West Master Executive
Council. Captain Don Steinman will remain as MEC chairman, First officer Darcy Pierce as

Don Steinman for the MEC

As of this evening, both AFA and America West management are still considering the
National Mediation Board’s proffer of arbitration, although AFA has scheduled a press
conference and public announcement for Friday the 12th at 12:00 noon. As
discussed on last Monday’s interim hotline update, a 30-day cooling off period will begin
only when one party or the other rejects the proffer. If and when this occurs, the NMB
will schedule more negotiations during the cooling off period under so-called “super
mediation.” Importantly, by law neither side may engage in self-help such as a
strike, a chaos campaign, or a lockout until the NMB releases the parties at the end of
the 30-day period. Additional details are available in Monday’s hotline recording, which
you may select from the main menu.

There is very little news to report on the merger front this week, although there is no
shortage of rumors. Management continues to be very tight-lipped. The Merger Committee
continued internal discussions this week, meeting with outside counsel and ALPA attorneys
in Washington.

The January-February issue of the Fenix Flight has been mailed from the Herndon
print shop and should arrive in your home mailboxes within the next week. If you do not
receive your copy by the end of the month, please call Communications Specialist Yvette
Freeman at the MEC office so that she may verify your mailing address, and ensure that you
receive future issues and publications.

All ALPA offices, including the MEC office, will be closed on Monday, February 15 in
observance of Washington’s Birthday.
