Merger Fund delinquents
The MEC has passed a resolution declaring December 31st as the deadline by which merger
fund delinquents must pay their assessment. Those members who remain delinquent after the
first of the year will face charges and a hearing under Article VIII of the ALPA
Constitution and By-Laws, and could be subject to expulsion from ALPA and termination by
America West for non-payment of dues and assessments.

Jannice Zambo
We have good news to report from long-time MEC office secretary Jannice Zambo. Jannice is
mid-way through a lengthy course of chemotherapy and is in good spirits, feeling well,
and, importantly, responding well to treatment. Jannice would like to send every pilot
holiday greetings, plus many thanks for the cards and calls she has received from so many
of you. And we would like to send her best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday and year
to come.

AFA negotiations
America West flight attendant and management negotiators, along with a mediator from the
National Mediation Board, met in Washington for two days of negotiations on Monday and
Tuesday of this week. Talks ended on Tuesday without an agreement. In early January, the
mediator will notify the parties whether discussions are to continue or will be declared
at impasse. Meanwhile, positive response to ALPA’s solidarity campaign has been nearly
universal.

UAL early contract opener
Around the industry, we note that United’s pilots and management have agreed to a set of
“Protocols for Reaching a Seamless Agreement,” that call for an early exchange
of opening letters and a shared goal of achieving a new contract on the amendable date of
their current agreement. The America West MEC and negotiating committee continue to
accelerate our own preparations for contract negotiations, with a goal of assembling
opening bargaining positions in the spring of 1999, one year ahead of the amendable date.

Christmas Greetings
One note on the office schedule. The MEC office will be closed tomorrow, Thursday the
24th, through Sunday December 27th, and will only be open Monday through Wedesday of next
week, as well. As this year comes to a close, I’d like to extend the warmest of holiday
cheer on behalf of the MEC to each of you and to your families. But as always, special
wishes go to those flying holiday schedules, away from home and hearth. Merry Christmas,
ladies and gentlemen.

Next weeks’ hotline will be a New Years edition on
Wednesday, December 30th.
