  MEC Hotline
This is Communications Committee
Chairman David Weeks with the MEC Hotline for February 25. Tonight’s topics are:

Management’s WARN act notification of possible furloughs has raised far more questions
than it has answered. Pilots, and management, should remember that there are no, repeat
NO, provisions in the contract for out-of-seniority furlough. The MEC is preparing several
written communiqus describing the contractual privileges, and limitations, facing both
pilots and management if flight attendant self-help becomes a reality. Management has
addressed some of these issues in its information line recording for all employees at
800-767-5871.

On a temporary basis, and ostensibly as a security measure, America West has restricted
pilot lines in Maestro. As a result, in order to view your line, you will need to input
your “Personal Identification Number”; however, the name of the other pilot with
whom you will be flying with will be shown as “unlisted.” Also, in order to view
another pilot’s line, you would need to input the PIN number of the pilot whose line
you are trying to view. The company made this decision without advance notice, and without
ALPA’s approval. Although it is unclear how blocking lines in Maestro enhances the
security of the operation, it is abundantly clear that management’s action is viewed by
the pilot group as unnecessary and provocative.

On Monday March 1st, Jack Ryan, David Chambless, Eric Durnal, and Gary Bakewell
take office as local council representatives and as members of the America West MEC. In
preparation, the four attended ALPA’s Leadership Conference in Herndon, Virginia this
week, along with newly elected representatives from other ALPA groups.

A number of pilots have reported discrepancies on their 1998 401k statements. Apparently,
some statements show incorrect vesting figures. Please report discrepancies to the America
West Benefits department.

As everyone is aware by now, last Monday AWA management terminated any discussions about
the so-called “expression of interest” that United Airlines had in acquiring
America West. Your MEC, Merger Committee, and Negotiating Committee remain ready to deal
with any other merger possibilities that may arise. In the meanwhile, the MEC is devoting
its‘ full attention to the issues of the day. We recommend that our members do the
same.
