MEC Meeting

One important resolution that was passed states that the
MEC will not support any scheduling practice that contravenes known scientific principles
about fatigue, in this case back-to-back scheduling of C to A reserve assignments. This
practice clearly violates known scientific facts about fatigue, and may violate the FARs.
The MEC has gone on record opposing this practice. It is worth noting that this resolution
may negatively impact certain pilots who like this practice, for lifestyle reasons. The
MEC feels strongly that safety issues are paramount, and override certain lifestyle or
bidding preferences.

Flight Attendants Enter “Super-mediation”

CHAOS Phone Bank

Volunteers are also needed to help answer the phones in
4-hour shifts beginning Saturday, March 19 and continuing as necessary. If you would like
to volunteer, please call Bonnie at the MEC office as soon as possible.

Merger Fund Delinquents

These pilots have decided to let their colleagues give them
a free ride rather than pay their fair share of the investment in seniority protection and
job security. The members on this list will be expelled from the Association. All on the
list face the possibility of termination from America West, under Section 29 of the Pilots
Agreement.

That concludes this week’s update. Fly safely; fly
your contract; and wear your pins and ribbons. The next scheduled hotline will be
Thursday, March 18 or sooner if news develops. Thanks for listening.

  MEC Hotline
 This is Communications
Committee Chairman David Weeks with the MEC Hotline for March 11. Tonight’s topics
are:

The first formal MEC meeting with the newly elected representatives was held this past
Tuesday, March 9. In addition to the presentation of key committee reports, quite a few
resolutions were passed, including the re-appointment of the Merger and Negotiating
Committee members, and the re-appointment of several other committee chairpersons.

Your newly elected representatives will hold an informal “Meet Your LEC” forum
on Monday, March 15. The forum will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Terminal 4
conference room near the food court. All pilots are encouraged to attend.

Negotiations between America West management and flight attendants will resume on March 17th
in “super mediation” with the National Mediation Board in Washington, D.C. The
30-day cooling off period ends at 10:00 p.m. mountain time on March 19th. If an
agreement is not reached prior to that time, both parties will be legal to engage in
self-help.

The MEC and Strike Preparedness Committee plan to provide a phone bank for pilots to call
in the event that the flight attendants and America West fail to reach an agreement.
Several pilot volunteers will be in the office beginning Thursday, March 18 to answer
questions pilots may have concerning any potential strike, CHAOS activities, or management
lockout. The phone bank hours will be announced on next week’s hotline message.

In the event of a flight attendant job action or management lockout, all pilots who will
be flying or on a layover on or after March 19, are strongly encouraged to utilize a new
Crew Tracking Form. The form will provide ALPA with the ability to locate and communicate
with our pilots if the need arises. The form will be distributed to all pilot mailboxes
this week. If you will be flying or on layover on March 19, complete the form once you
have reached your destination, and fax it to the ALPA MEC office immediately.

The Negotiating Committee has resumed regular meetings to prepare for Contract 2000
negotiations. Preparations were interrupted by the need to prepare for a potential
corporate buyout last month. Now that the buyout frenzy has subsided (at least for the
moment), the Committee has fully re-focused on Contract 2000. The committee is currently
working to finalize a pilot survey that will be distributed to all pilots within the next
few months. In addition, the committee is preparing for upcoming FOQA negotiations.

We still have a few pilots who have failed to pay their Merger Fund assessment. Those
pilots are ALPA members William Drexler, Miguel Esteves, John Greenfield, Lai Kuku, and
Michael Searles, as well as non-members James Dewald, Michael Johnston, Jim Keane, and
Karl McDonnough.
