the Arizona and Florida addresses for Jannice’s family.)
Cards of condolences may be sent to: Mr. Frank Zambo,

The names of pilot volunteers have been posted to the

Headquarters Security
To help eliminate the problem, anyone entering the building
is to immediately check in at the security desk. Don Kelly, manager of AWA Corporate
Security, has assured us that this procedure is in no way meant to restrict the pilot
group or any other employee group when visiting the new headquarters. It is simply to
address the safety concerns of the contractors who are still working on various floors of
the building. If you have any problems when visiting the new building, please contact Don
Kelly at 693-8317.
New Parking Procedures
In the meantime, the City of Tempe has stepped up its
police patrols of the parking area to help prevent the number of vehicle break-ins.

That concludes this week’s update. Fly safely; fly
your contract; and wear your ALPA pins. The next scheduled hotline will be Thursday, April
1. Thanks for listening.

MEC Hotline |

This is Communications
Committee Chairman David Weeks with the MEC Hotline for March 25. Tonight’s topics
are:
It is with my deepest regrets that I inform the pilot group of the death of long-time MEC
office secretary Jannice Zambo. Jannice died Tuesday night after battling liver cancer for
the last several months.
Although the embargo was lifted immediately after the announcement of the agreement with
AFA, the MEC will pursue a grievance on this issue. To help in preparing for this
grievance, we ask that any pilots who were financially inconvenienced as a result of the
pass travel embargo, please contact the Grievance Committee immediately.
The MEC and the Strike Preparedness Committee would like to issue the following note of
thanks and commendation. On less than 36 hours notice, 25 of our fellow pilots agreed to
give up part of their time off last weekend in order to help staff a 24-hour phone bank
and respond to AWA pilots’ questions concerning potential AFA self-help. Their spirit
of sacrifice and willingness to put the good of the group ahead of their own needs stands
as an example of the commitment we must all make to each other and this union. Only by
following this example, even in small ways, can we expect to succeed in facing the
challenges ahead.

America West has sent mixed signals to the MEC as well as to individual pilots regarding
the vacation of pilots who are scheduled for upgrade or transition training in 1999. The
company had threatened to cancel some vacations earlier this year, then retracted the
threat and reinstated vacations. Now, some pilots have again received cancellation
notices. The contract states that pilots who are upgrading or transitioning will keep
their awarded vacation. The only exception is if the company must cancel due to
operational needs. If such occurs, contractual due process must be followed. In spelling
out such due process, the contract requires that seniority must be respected if and when
vacation cancellations occur, regardless of whether or not the affected pilot changed seat
or equipent. Discussions with flight operations management are ongoing.
The MEC has learned that the City of Tempe will require that America West use contract
security at the new headquarters as a result of several complaints from the building
contractors. The contractors have complained that certain individuals have been accessing
various floors of the building without proper authorization.
Effective April 5, new parking procedures at the east lot will go into effect, which are
designed to open additional spaces and remove unauthorized vehicles. Although full details
are as yet unavailable, it appears that vehicle tags will be issued through the Chief
Pilot’s office in the near future. Barry Kendrick, chairman of the Air Carrier Security
Committee, has been briefed by management. Unfortunately, the company has acknowledged
that the proper decals and policy manual information will not be distributed to everyone
prior to April 5th. The MEC recommends that pilots who are issued citations or
pay a towing charge should submit the paperwork directly to the chief pilots office.
We have received several messages from pilots having trouble accessing the Committee pages
of the MEC web site. When the site first went online last Friday, the security system that
makes those pages inaccessible to non-members, inadvertently also made them inaccessible
to members. That problem has now been corrected. However, several pilots are still having
trouble accessing those pages because they do know their ALPA password. If you do not know
your ALPA password, click on the “Forgot Your Password” link on the ALPA
members-only page. This page is accessed when you click on the Committees MEC web site.
Follow the instructions and your password will automatically be emailed to you. If you
have never received an ALPA password, you must call the Member Services department in
order to receive one.
