Korczynski Arbitration
The five-member System Board of Adjustment has ruled in favor of Edwin Korczynski, who was
terminated by America West in 1995. The arbitrator ruled that there was no just cause for
termination, reinstated Mr. Korczynski with no loss of seniority, and ordered America West
to reimburse him for medical expenses and COBRA premiums incurred while he was terminated.
Korczynski, who is currently receiving long term disability benefits, will return to
flying status when he is medically recertified.

Jannice Zambo
Ms. Jannice Zambo, a long-time ALPA employee and the America West MEC secretary since
there’s been an America West MEC, has been out of the office for the last couple of weeks
due to illness. On behalf of the entire MEC and ALPA staff, we would like to extend
Jannice our best wishes for a speedy recovery. If you would like to send a card or letter
to Jannice, please put it in the T-4 ALPA box, or mail it to the MEC office at:

Two Gateway
432 N. 44th Street, Suite 410
Phoenix, AZ 85008

AWA Department of Defense Inspection
America West will undergo its biannual Department of Defense inspection the week of
September 28. The outcome of this inspection will determine the airline’s fitness to fly
certain government contracts.

LEC Nominiation Ballots
An administrative backlog at Herndon, caused by the Northwest strike, postponed the
mailing of our LEC nomination ballots by a week. The ballots, which were originally
supposed to be mailed last week, will be mailed by the end of this week.

PBS Ballots
PBS ballots will be counted in Herndon next Thursday, September 24. The results of the PBS
vote will be announced on this Hotline that evening. They will also be published in the
September-October issue of the Fenix Flight.

Fenix Flight
Speaking of the Fenix Flight, I know many of you are wondering when the July-August
issue will be distributed to your T-4 mailboxes. ALPA’s print shop has assured us that the
newsletters will be mailed from Herndon tomorrow, and we can expect to receive them on
Monday, September 21. Look for the newsletter in your mailboxes by the end of next week.

Vacancy Bid
The due date for bidding under Vacancy Bid 2000-01 is tomorrow, September 18, at 1200.
Remember that if you have an existing “paper” standing bid, it must be
re-submitted via computer in order to be considered. Also, distribution of the 1999
Vacation Bid is anticipated on October 1.

Northwest MEC Ratifies New Contract
You’ve probably heard by now that the Northwest MEC ratified a new contract for its pilot
group, ending its 15-day strike on September 12. The new contract provides the Northwest
pilots with a 12% pay increase over the term of the contract, stock options, retroactive
pay for the two years since the old contract became amendable, and the phased elimination
of the B-Scale. The Northwest strike was the biggest in ALPA history. Through their unity,
commitment, dedication, and organization, Northwest’s pilots demonstrated the ultimate
power of labor in the collective bargaining process. We will be well served to remember
this demonstration as we approach negotiations for Contract 2000. The next time you see a
Northwest pilot, offer your congratulations on their success, and your thanks for the
message they sent to the entire industry.

The next scheduled hotline will be Thursday, September
24th. Until then, stay focused, fly safe, fly the contract, and thanks for listening.
